What is a cataract and how can it effect me?

A cataract is simply a clouding of the lens within the eye. The lens is made mostly of water and protein. Specific proteins within the lens are responsible for maintaining its clarity. Most of people are born with clear lenses, but as we age, the structures of these lens proteins are altered, ultimately leading to a clouding of the lens. Some other factors that may lead to cataracts forming earlier in some adults include over exposure to UV light, smoking, diabetes, or the use of certain medications such as oral, topical, or inhaled steroids.

You are at risk for developing cataracts are if you are 55 or older. Cataract development is usually a very gradual process of normal aging but can occasionally occur rapidly. In fact, many people are unaware that they have cataracts because there is no pain associated with the condition and the changes in their vision are very gradual.

Symptoms of Cataract

  • Blurred Vision

  • Haloes in the eye

  • glare sensitivity

  • “film” over the eye(s)

  • Spots in front of the eye(s)

  •  Nearsightedness

  •  Trouble with seeing color

  • Double vision

Now most want to know how can it effect you and the honest truth is it will effect you as you age in the most usual of cases. There are some rare cases where a young adult may have a cataract and that is not average but extremely rare.

This is the shot of a adolescent with cataracts and as you can see it looks more clumpy.

This is a shot of the normal cataract not so clumpy and usually effecting the elderly eye type. In this specific case the woman here has cataract blindness! Meaning she cannot see a thing in her left eye because of the fogging.
