Summary: This source talks about the common cataract by introducing one to the anatomy as well as the symptoms, risks, and other factors regarding the eye for such a surgery. This article is very well developed and gives a great explanation regarding the topic of what a cataracts is. The anatomy of the eye is laid out right in front of you so that you can easily see all the parts of the eye and find where the cataract would be. It explains lots of different things and even hits on the development from easy to see to super foggy.

Quotes: “As time goes by the lens can become so clouded it blocks the retina of the eye”(p.3)

“For people who have cataracts in both eyes the doctor will not replace them at the same time”(p.4).

Assessment: This is a credible source as it was published by medline plus. This publisher is extremely known and helps the normal to collegiate level medical minds equipping them with knowledge to last a lifetime. In this source there is so much unfolded in one setting and the detail is obvious to see. There is everything from how cataracts looks to what it will be like after a surgery. I believed this to be a great source and an article filled with so much knowledge that will be able to be used on my projeect next semester. This is definitely a well regarded source and also up to date as it was published this year.

Reflection: Such a source will help to develop my understanding of the cataracts in the eye. This website source helped me to see that there is so much more to the eye and that the cataracts is a type of synecdoche to this anatomical figure. Annotated bibliography

Bibliography: Falcon, Richard C. "General Surgery." Research Starters. Salem Press, Sept. 2013. Web. 12 Sep. 2014.

Summary: The article talks about the science and profession of a general surgeon. It gives insight on what it used to be to how its improved to the present day. The piece then talks about the diagnostics and treatments regarding this area of medicine as it is always growing as surgeons are always learning. The many specializations are also brought up as there are a long list that consists of stuff from lugs to my favorite the eyes. What is also very helpful is the diagram of the operating room as it provides an actual image for readers like me but also labels everything so I am aware of what tools and equipment go where.

Quotes:

“Surgery today is one of the most respected medical specialties, requiring full training in the disciplines of medicine, as well as years of extensive work in surgical procedures. After becoming physicians, candidates for surgery spend years working under established surgeons learning the techniques that they will use in practice. They are subjected to intensive examination and receive certification only when their peers are convinced that they can perform their duties capably.”

Assessment: This is credible source because it is off the university system of georgia’s search engine galileo and is published by Magill’s Medical Guide which is a well-known book that focuses on the key concepts of the medical world. The books group of authors are also quite noteworthy and give a lot of details as most of them have had years of medical experience.

Reflection: This piece of the medical guide fits my research as I am going to be mentoring for General Surgery and hope to be able to one day do the same in the medical field. I will probably use this article to give my readers knowledge as a I work on finding detailed research in the coming months.

Summary: This article talks about the history of the eye industry especially in Atlanta,GA. The piece illustrates historical references so that one can see where eye development really came from. The article shows the establishment and success’ of the many doctors that made cataract and corneal surgeries possible. Its amazing how it is relayed to the reader because I would have never thought Emory played such a big role in ophthalmology.I thought this article was quite interesting to add as background knowledge on cataracts. In this article its extremely relevant to note that most eye observations and improvements happened here in Atlanta, GA. The piece is titled “The Emory Eye Center” and gives adequate knowledge on what Georgia has been doing to increase success in the eye industry. The article also talks about two men in particular Grady Clay and F. Phinizy Calhoun Jr. both of which made great advances in the eye industry.Clay in ophthalmology and Calhoun in ophthalmologic labs going on to help people with corneal transplants and cataracts surgeries. Both men were able to come up with ways to enhance the eyes of many patients for years to come.

Quotes:“Emory remains a top eye center in the country, according to Ophthalmology Times, a leading professional journal, and in the annual rankings of U.S. News and World Report magazine.”

“Research projects at Emory include studies of melanoma of the eye, retinal pigment transplantation and immunology, drug delivery to the posterior eye, corneal retinal cell evaluation, hereditary cataract, age-related macular degeneration, and gene therapy. Clinical trials are conducted in melanoma, diabetes, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.”

Assessment:This source is credible because of the sources featured in the piece. Emory is obviously a great medical facility but its also one of the top places to get surgery done and one of the most demanded surgeries of which I am doing this whole project on Cataracts surgery. This article also comes form the New Encyclopedia off of the Galileo search engine so it is very credible and truthful because the site makes sure to showcase only the most truthful sources.

Reflection: I will most definetly use this source as background information for my project. Its very important to give the readers of my upcoming presentation a good source of knowledge for them to understand eye surgeries in general. I like this article because it is strictly factual info on the history of eye surgeries especially cataracts.
